At Last... The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland (2008)

C'est une réédition du documentaire The Making Of Electric Ladyland, avec 40 minutes supplémentaires (sortie pour les 40 ans du double album). La nouvelle version est bien meilleure. L'album est abordé dans son intégralité, de façon équilibrée cette fois-ci. C'est désormais un très bon documentaire.

Les quelques passages inédits (un solo de sitar électrique joué à la wah wah !) et autres extraits de pistes isolées raviront les amateurs, ainsi que les témoignages des personnes qui ont contribué à la création de l'album.

Il y a heureusement quelques exceptions... mais il est terrible de se rendre compte que la plupart des acteurs de premier plan sont aujourd'hui décédés.

Comme je le notais dans mon commentaire consacré à la première version du documentaire, les rapports de forces sont bien mis en évidence. Gerry Stickells et Eddie Kramer soulignent à juste titre que jamais Jimi n'aurait pu faire "1983" du temps de Chas Chandler - alors que dans le même temps, Noel et Mitch regrettent le fait que Jimi, livré à lui-même, pouvait se perdre (le nombre de prises consacrées à "Gypsy Eyes" !).

Seul regret : quelques pistes interactives en bonus auraient été un vrai plus.

Some of Jimi’s closest associates are seen on screen discussing their recollections of Hendrix and the project including JHE bassist Noel Redding, drummer Mitch Mitchell, manager Chas Chandler who discovered Hendrix after he left the Animals; drummer Buddy Miles who appeared on the album and later went on to work with Hendrix in The Band of Gypsys, Jefferson Airplane’s Jack Casady, Steve Winwood and Dave Mason from Traffic and others who participated in the Electric Ladyland sessions that took place at Olympic studios in London and The Record Plant in New York. One of the highlights of the program includes a session with original Electric Ladyland engineer Eddie Kramer who discusses the techniques Hendrix, Mitchell and Redding employed in recording Electric Ladyland and playing some of the original multitrack tapes to illustrate the process.

The special edition of Electric Ladyland will be released to mark its 40th anniversary.

- a section where Eddie Kramer plays a Jimi sitar track (played through a wah wah) that (I think) was an unused overdub for 1983.

- more Have You Ever Been To (Electric Ladyland) track isolations

- more of the the Voodoo Chile alternate take including the band vamping after Jimi breaks a string. Kudos to EH for leaving in Jimi's f-bombs after breaking the string.
