Band Of Gypsys (1970)

Le CD 4 du coffret The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions de Miles Davis présente deux prises d'un inédit qui a de quoi intéresser tout amateur du Band Of Gypsys : "Ali" présente une ligne de basse qui est directement inspirée de "Who Knows". Elle combine les deux riffs joués par Billy Cox, avec quelques variations introduites par des pauses.

Pour rappel, l'album A Tribute To Jack Johnson faisait déjà indirectement référence au Band Of Gypsys ("We Gotta Live Together") via la transformation du riff de "Sing A Simple Song", la face B du single "Everyday People" de Sly & The Family Stone. Le résultat était vraiment stupéfiant.

This is the album that Hendrix "owed" Capitol for releasing him over to Reprise Records and significantly, it isn't a studio effort, as his Reprise effort's have been. Which is not to imply that it is any better than those Experience albums. The context of the album is vital -- Band of Gypsys was one of Hendrix' 1969 amalgamations consisting of Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass, among others. They hadn't been together very long when this session was recorded live at the Fillmore East, New Year's Eve 1969/70, and the music shows it.

Both sides are basically extended jams with lots of powerful, together guitar by Hendrix, able bass by Cox, at times overbearing drums by Miles and rather lame, buried vocals by both Hendrix and Miles. The group sound is surprisingly similar to Hendrix' old "Foxy Lady" and "Purple Haze" days, with the significant difference that here Hendrix really gets into his guitar playing. No more the flashy, crotch-oriented gimmickry and extended wah-wahs -- here he just stands still and shows us how adept he is with the ax. The support from Cox is always inventive, but Miles' drumming is definitely disturbing and exceedingly pedestrian at times. Hendrix overcomes on pure tension alone, as both "Message To Love" and "Who Knows" aptly demonstrate.

The problem is the vocals -- all the tunes are new ones and with Hendrix' weird poetic sensibility (akin to LeRoi Jones in effect at times: catch the poem on the inside cover), it would have been a large improvement had we been presented with a little less drumming and a lot more vocal. The excitement and hypnotic compression so apparent in the music would have been pressed home even more forcefully behind Hendrix' drawling, heavenly inflected voice, because Hendrix is not just a run-of-the-mill R&B singer -- his voice is just as much an instrument as his guitar. But, it's all just potential this time out, with the one exception of the twelve-minute "Machine Gun," dedicated to "all the soldiers that are fighting in Chicago, Milwaukee and New York and... oh, yes...all the soldiers fighting in Viet Nam." Here the Hendrix vocal is in the forefront and perfectly matched to his most desperate, driving guitar solo ever. You can hear the sirens wailing and the entire mood, even down to Miles' drumming, is one of confrontation and freneticism mixed in equal parts.

This album is Hendrix the musician. With just bass and drum support he is able to transfuse and transfix on the strength of his guitar-work alone.

Contrary to popular belief, Hendrix was not in any kind of artistic decline during the last year of his life. In fact, it was quite the opposite. This apocalyptic performance of “Machine Gun,” featuring Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, demonstrates that Jimi was still growing in leaps and bounds near the end. But while Band of Gypsys captures some of the guitarist’s greatest improvisations to date, he was still dissatisfied with its outcome.

“I distinctly remember that Jimi wasn’t particularly thrilled with Band of Gypsys,” says engineer Eddie Kramer who recorded the album and co-mixed and edited it with Hendrix. “He felt that Buddy Miles was trying to steal his thunder throughout the performance with his excessive scat singing. I can still see Jimi with his head buried in his arms, laying on the mixing console during playback saying, ‘Buddy, would you please just shut up!’ So, I would chop out huge passages of Buddy singing. And then I’d chop some more.”

Dans sa chronique du Times-Record en date du 6 juin 1970, Charles Burns n'est pas tendre avec l'album, et plus particulièrement avec Buddy Miles.

A propos de source d'inspiration : Buddy Miles a certainement écouté le "Sing Lady Sing" du New York Rock & Roll Ensemble, un titre de leur album Faithful Friends paru en 1969 - qui comporte d'ailleurs une reprise de Jimi Hendrix. La partie de guitare rythmique de "Them Changes" est basée sur le même motif et le fameux riff (joué par les cuivres sur sa version) déjà largement présent.

Of the original songs on Faithful Friends, perhaps the most familiar-sounding to the general rock audience is "Sing Lady Sing," due to its similarity to a different record that ended up getting much more exposure. "Buddy Miles took pretty much all the guitar lines that Michael and I wrote and used them in 'Them Changes,'" says Nivison. "It is the same song with a different vocal." As for the group's cover of "Wait Until Tomorrow," written by a musician with whom Miles was soon to (briefly) play, Clif explains, "Michael and I were great Hendrix fans. He heard us play his song at [the New York club] The Scene in 1969. He told us he really liked it."

L'album de Jimi Hendrix qui revient le plus souvent sur ma platine. Je l'adore.

Une pochette que je n'avais jamais vue : La photo, elle, n'a rien à voir avec le BOG... Elle est issue, comme celle utilisée sur l'album officiel du live à l'Isle Of Wight, du concert de Berlin du 4 septembre 1970.

^ J'ai acheté ce disque en 71. J'étais très surpris par les parties vocales de Buddy Miles. C'est quoi ce truc ?
Je venais découvrir vraiment Jimi et je n' pas encore lu le premier bio par Chris Welch. Alors je ne savais pas que BOG était une formation 100% black. Pas d'internet. Pas de livre. J'essayais d'imaginer qui était ce Buddy Miles et dans ma tete je voyais quelqu'un comme Frankie Valli, un sorte d'américain italiano.

à l'époque internet n'était qu'un truc intern à l'armée US et aux étudiants Américains, c'est sûr que pour trouver des infos sur le Band Of Gypsys et autres ça devait pas être une mince affaire

Je l'avais en pressage US d'époque, mais l'étiquette du disque Capitol était verte! Et elle était dans le même état que cet exemplair, d'ailleurs comme toutes les grosses pochette cartonée Américaine
