HONOLULU ADVERTISER :
“With all the fury of a violent hurricane, the Jimi Hendrix Experience uncorked a frenzied assortment of funky electronic soul sounds in their Island debut before a charged-up, sellout crowd at the Honolulu International Center Arena. Hendrix, the man with the fried hair, practical/v assaulted his guitar in a most exhausting, erotic display of guitarmanship. He made the guitar whine and whimper as he wailed and moaned. With 16 amplifiers on stage, the voltage was quite potent. Depending on where you were seated and how you were feeling, the Hendrix experience was deafening or delirious. He was thoroughly acceptable on ‘Hey Joe’ with one hand fingerings on the frets of the guitar, and the free flowing form enabled more improvisatory ramblings at mid point. Near the finale, Hendrix did ‘I Don’t Love For Today’ [sic] dedicated to the American Indian. Its simple message was peace, and there was goodwill in the crowd. When Hendrix burst into ‘Foxy Lady’, his claim to fame, there were cries of eclectic glee. But what followed was an unnecessary put-down of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ an instrumental which Hendrix manipulated to musicaIly desecrate everything for which the anthem stands. At one point he rat-tat-tatted sounds on his guitar to mimic machine gunfire. He flashed the V for peace symbol, and his arena fans responded. I think it was an un-American, unfortunate, unfunny spoof that spoiled anotherwise stand-out rock show. When ‘Purple Haze’ closed the show the crowd was on its feet - but I wouldn‘t call it a standing ovation. Hardly. Hendrix earlier had asked all to rise…for his disgusting ‘Star Spangled Banner’. Prior exiting, Hendrix rammed his guitar into some amps in a display of crude destructiveness. I didn‘t flip for this, but the zonked audience did.”
