Le concert est complet. Il n’existe à ma connaissance qu’un enregistrement audience de ce concert, de bonne qualité. Les trois instruments se détachent très bien, ainsi que le chant et les backings de Noel. La guitare est comme très souvent bien mise en avant. Il y a quelquefois des fluctuations de vitesse, mais rien de méchant.

Une très courte vidéo amateur d’environ 2 minutes a été faite et est visible sur Youtube, malheureusement non synchronisée avec le son.

Une anecdote originale : Il y a entre la scène et le public une assez grande étendue d’eau, ce qui fera flipper pas mal de monde à cause des évidents risques d’électrocution. Des spectateurs ne manqueront pas de se jeter dedans, et éclabousseront la scène. Les membres du groupe demanderont d’ailleurs souvent au public de faire plus attention (au moment de "Foxy Lady" et de "Little Wing" en particulier).  



Lors de l’Intro, les membres de groupe sont présentés, Jimi prend alors la parole pour expliquer qu’il devra s’accorder entre chaque morceau, et lance sa blague favorite : "Nous prenons soin de vos oreilles, et c’est pourquoi nous ne jouons pas trop fort". Vient ensuite un déluge de 3 minutes de sons et de notes apocalyptiques où le vibrato chauffe, on comprend immédiatement pourquoi il est impossible à la guitare de Jimi de rester accordée après ça.

"Are You Experienced" peut alors commencer le show, comme souvent lors de cette tournée américaine de 1968. Très bonne version, inspirée, avec son ambiance si particulière.

La guitare de Jimi baffouille un peu lors de l’intro de "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", et souffre d’un énorme problème de justesse, surtout dans les graves, et le morceau est très difficile à apprécier… On comprend bien que Jimi s’en rend compte lors du solo, où une partie est jouée avec les dents. La suite et la fin du morceau sont expédiées, et Jimi s’excuse à la fin si l’ensemble "sonne faux".

Jimi introduit "Red House" comme leur favorite, ayant été enregistrée en 1793, et dédit le morceau à Buddy Miles et à Carmine Appice (du groupe Vanilla Fudge qui ouvrait pour ce concert, avec aussi Eire Apparent et Soft Machine). Le tempo est assez lent et Mitch un peu mou. Le solo est magique, tout au moins dans sa première moitié, avec un feeling comme toujours omniprésent, et où la section rythmique se réveille un peu. Il y a malheureusement quelques cuts lors du passage à la wha wha en fin de solo.

Dédicacée comme toujours à quelques unes de leurs copines, "Foxy Lady" fait bien réagir le public. Très bonne présence de la basse de Noel lors du solo. Le groupe demande à l’audience de ne pas éclabousser la scène d’eau dans l’euphorie.

Puis vient "Fire", énergique et sauvage comme à son habitude. Noel se déchaîne en backing. Je soupçonne un petit cut à la fin du solo. Bonne version.  

Sans intro instrumentale à rallonge, "Hey Joe" déroule sans surprise. La qualité du son est ici moins bonne. Jimi nous fait le solo final avec les dents.

"Sunshine Of Your Love", est présentée par Jimi comme une chanson du meilleur groupe du monde, Cream. Jimi précise bien qu’ils ne la joueront pas mieux qu’eux. A noter un intéressant solo central de basse de Noel.

On passe directement à "I Don’t Live Today", où la voix de Jimi est étouffée. L’ensemble de l’interprétation est un peu brouillon.

Une première intro de "Little Wing" débute avec une corde de Mi grave complètement déréglée, et c’est insupportable. Jimi s’arrête de jouer au bout de 25 secondes en disant qu’il ne peut plus entendre ça et se raccorde. Noel en profite pour supplier les spectateurs de ne plus se jeter dans l’eau et les prévient du risque d’électrocution, Jimi prend sa suite. L’intro est aussitôt refaite (avec des variantes, sacré Jimi). C’est vraiment dommage qu’il y ait ici des variations de vitesse de bande, car l’interprétation est de tout premier ordre.

Le concert se termine avec l’enchaînement "Star Spangled Banner - Purple Haze", Mitch essaye de meubler l’espace sonore lors de l’hymne, mais il est difficile de déceler une synchronisation entre les deux compères à ce moment là. L’intro de "Purple Haze" est de tout premier ordre. On entend un peu trop la basse, mais, pour une fois… Le solo est classique, et la fin a capella est jouée avec les dents, Jimi cite de nouveau une partie de son hymne.

Le public est remercié chaleureusement.

Voilà, au final, un bon concert du groupe, malgré les problèmes de justesse, avec d’assez bonnes versions de quelques morceaux. Bien entendu, je ne me vois pas choisir ce CD pour présenter Jimi à un novice, mais il est intéressant pour les collectionneurs.

(je me répète, je sais!!!) il existe ça (les photos ici présentes) et un film professionel que détenait Noel Redding d'une durée de 15 minutes, est-ce Tatajanie le détient maintnant mystère?

LOS ANGELES TIMES - ‘Jimi Hendrix in Concert at Bowl’ by Pete Johnson: “The Jimi Hendrix Experience was too much for the ushers who have managed to confine spectators to their seats during the summer series of rock concerts in the Hollywood Bowl. The audience pushed forward, clogged the aisles and stood craning to see the wild man and his guitar.
It was one of Hendrix’s best appearances locally and came only a year after he received a generally adverse reaction from a Bowl crowd who had come to see the Mamas and the Papas and were hardly ready for several hundreds watts of feedback guitar manipulated by a showman who knows the value of dashes of vulgarity. This, however, was his show and it was very easy to forget his frustrated retreat from the stage last summer.
Since then two of his albums have become best sellers, he has become one of the most-discussed guitar stylists in rock and - probably most important in terms of packing the Bowl - Hendrix the Iconoclastic Negro has become a rallying point for youth in their conflict with adult tastes.
He heads one of the best trios in rock music, a trio dominated by his screaming guitar and dry husky voice. But his dominance is made possible by the solid underpinning of Redding and Mitchell on bass and drums, a freely interacting rhythm section which would stand out in any rock combo, whatever its size.
Hendrix’ guitar playing is hard to assess because his electronic manipulations are so tightly interwoven with his basic instrumental technique.
No one else handles feedback as well as he does and his knowledge of the instrument is so thoroughly that he can play easily with one hand, with his teeth or in any number of strange performing positions. It would, however, be interesting to hear him work with an acoustic guitar.
His voice is not one of the greatest in pop music and his lyrics tend to be simplistic, but he remains one of the most electric (in either sense) acts in rock because of his theatrical talents. He embodies rebellion on stage and manages to distill [sic] the primitive sensuality of a decade’s worth of rock performers into a one-hour show.”

“Splish-splash, I was taking a bath, roundaboutuh Saturday night’ At the Holly wood Bowl, mayhap??? Jimi Hendrix didn’t play Darin’s plastic-rock standard Saturday night but it was the themesong of his wildman Set. Like sort of an ‘Oh yeah, that’s where rock excitement is at, as opposed to heavyhype rock excitemachine.’
There is a minim of gittar-lickin with his teeth and no other parts of his anatomy are brought into the sound production. Hendrix has now secured sufficiently to forfend [sic] gimcrackery and lay it on with the music and projections of his weird, wiggy personna [sic] The man is an undisputable virtuoso, the Chuck Berry of the acid generation, a maestro of amp feedback technology as well as the guitar.
Perhaps halfway through his bachannale [sic] of decibels, as Hendrix punctuates a climax with one of his kama sutra guitar-neck phallus splits and dips, there is a bit of a tinkle in the olde-majestic Hollywood pool down front and there is some cat in there doing – what else? - the swim. Hendrix goes right on creating joyful noise and ejaculating his box.
It’s like a miniscule concentrate of the worldwide balance of terror. The rent-a-cops don’t want to go into the pool and get their uniforms and bullets wet. Hendrix obviously couldn’t dream of blowing his ultimate coolth image so when he finishes the number he says something like, ‘Groovy man, do your thing.’ So naturally a chick comes into the pool and freaks out.... Naturally everybody in the sold out bowl who wasn’t in the mood for a late night swim was leaping up and down on the seats and trampling over the poor ushers to get down front. You can see the flame of insane hatred in the eyes of the rent-a-fuzz as they do Keystone Kop chases around the front row. But apparently they hadn’t laid on enough heatpower and the pool became something out of an Esther Williams Splashmovie as about 50 kids - enough to eventually fill the entire center of the pool - did fancy swandives and fast freestyle swimming to join the water sharing rite....
Noel Redding started making announcements that he was afraid he’d get electrocuted with his bass if the water brothers didn’t stop splashing. Mitch Mitchell left the drums to offer his towel and a hand up to a few waterlogged waders.
It was getting towards 12:30 a.m. and Hendrix announces that the management will turn off the power if he doesn’t get through his last couple of songs with out any more hooraw. A guy storms the stage to stick his head into one of the speakers; is thrown off. By this
time the ‘Experience’ has blown out two speakers. The sticky-sweet carrion smell of death agony electronic circuitry is drifting up to the bleachers.
It has became a genyooine Pop Happening teetering at the edge of bloodbath hysteria as all good mobscenes should. But somehow festive cool is maintained, Hendrix finds just the right touch to bring everybody down to earth once more by prefacing his last number with a lengthy, discordant treatment of the National Anthem - which isn’t just a freakout tune, let’s face it.”

“There were 18,000 people there and the place was packed to capacity. It was one of the most exciting concerts I’ve ever seen - Jimi was fantastic... The Soft Machine started the show and were pretty good but the Vanilla Fudge had a lot of trouble with the sound system. It wasn’t perfect for Jimi either but he put on such a good show it didn’t matter.
The orchestra pit in front of the stage is filled with water when there are no extra musicians and half the audience ended up swimming around in it - well fifty of them anyway!’

Electric Ladyland - 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition propose, sur son 3ème CD, une seconde source de ce concert.

La source est presque complète : la bande s'arrête lors de "Foxy Lady" (qui est coupé lors du solo central) et reprend avec "Fire" (lors du son dernier refrain, on a donc le droit au solo final). Sa qualité est fluctuante : très musicale sur un titre comme "Red House", moins quand l'Experience envoie du pâté (la voix sature pas mal).
Bref, qualité tout à fait acceptable pour un Dagger - franchement insuffisante pour une publication officielle (mis à par les fans, qui a écouté le CD en entier ne serait-ce qu'une seule fois ?).

Il y a effectivement eu du mouvement sur la scène :
